Study Abroad at the City University of Hong Kong

Picture

Background

During the spring of 2016, I was presented with the opportunity to study abroad at the City University of Hong Kong, a leading university located in Kowloon Tong.

My adventures in Hong Kong marked my first time outside of Asia and needless to say it was a wonderful experience.

For most people, Hong Kong is known for its beautiful skyline and its status as one of the top financial centers and international tourist destinations. However, I quickly discovered there was more to Hong Kong than just gigantic skyscrapers and that it truly had a diverse, exciting, and unique culture as the city where 'East meets West'..

Education

During my spring term, I was able to expand the breadth of my educational background by enrolling in classes from City University's College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences. My classes included:

International Political Economy:  International Political Economy enabled me to better understand international economics and political environments. Various topics discussed included global supply chains, national capitalism in a global economy, automation, basic income, and the possible evolution of Hong Kong into a hub for technology based on the concept of the knowledge economy. For our class project, we were challenged to develop a presentation and demonstrate how we would deploy economic strategies or economic tools in order to tackle environmental change. We chose to focus on a cap and trade system and our initial proposal is linked on the right.

Fundamentals of Social Entrepreneurship: Throughout the Fundamentals of Social Entrepreneurship course, I learned the essentials of managing a hybrid social enterprise. Topics discussed included the evolution of the Third Sector economy into social innovation, public policy regarding social innovation, management of the growth of emerging enterprises, and specific marketing techniques and strategies for social enterprises. Specific SEs studied include Dialogue in the Dark, the Embrace Infant Warmer, and APOPO.
Theories of Development: During Theories of Development, we discussed several fascinating economic topics such as dependency theory, free markets especially in relation to Hong Kong, neoliberalism, the Washington Consensus, China's model of development, and the East Asian miracle.

Psychology I: Psychology I helped me develop a strong foundation to the study of psychology. Basic topics covered included developmental psychology, theories of personality, and social psychology. I independently explored advanced topics such as consumer behavior and relationship marketing.

Exploration

Hong Kong. When I wasn't studying in Hong Kong, you could find me hiking parts of the Hong Kong trail, riding the MTR, haggling at the night market, eating Dim sum in Mong Kok, or exploring the night life in LKF. Specific events I particularly enjoyed included celebrating Chinese New Year, hiking Lantau Peak & Lion's Rock, and visiting Victoria Peak.

International Travel. I also had the good fortune to take several enlightening and exciting side trips on my journey. Places visited include Hanoi/Sapa in Vietnam, Kota Kinabalu in Malaysia, Boracay in the Phillipines, and Macao.
